The Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center (SE CASC) in partnership with Consortium host NC State University is seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar in social, natural, and/or physical science research and synthesis to further climate adaptation science and practice in the Southeast and US Caribbean. The mission of the SE CASC is to help fish, wildlife, ecosystems, and people in the Southeast and US Caribbean adapt to a changing climate. The SE CASC focuses on the co-production of actionable science for natural and cultural resource management. Extreme events in our region, such as storm severity, flooding, and high heat, are increasing with climate change. However, there is no clear consensus on how to promote climate adaptation for species, ecosystems, or people, following extreme events given they can magnify climate change effects. Moreover, extreme events are often not isolated. Multiple extreme events may have compounding effects, which may make adaptation actions for resilience difficult to design.
We seek a Postdoctoral Scholar who has strong quantitative and qualitative data analysis and synthesis skills to focus on climate adaptation actions in the Southeast and US Caribbean after extreme or compounding events, or actions that help prepare for future extreme or compounding scenarios. The successful individual will have some flexibility to design a research or synthesis project addressing this broad theme. The Postdoctoral Scholar will have an opportunity to work with the management community in a co-production process to develop research and synthesis projects that meet end-user needs. In addition, the successful scholar will have an opportunity to mentor a group of SE CASC graduate student fellows through a team science synthesis project on extreme or compounding events. The Postdoctoral Scholar will be co-mentored by Rebecca Irwin (SE CASC Consortium Director), Cari Furiness (SE CASC Assistant Consortium Director), and Research Affiliates in the SE CASC.
Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, a research statement (2 pages maximum) identifying one or more research and/or synthesis projects they are interested in pursuing in the SE CASC region on extreme or compounding events and the skills they bring to the project evidenced by their prior research experiences, a mentoring statement (1-page maximum) discussing their prior experiences and approaches for mentoring students in research, and names and contact information for three professional references. This position is initially for 1 year with the possibility for renewal up to 4 years. Application review will begin on February 15 until the position is filled.
