2025 Internship - Distributed Tactical Awareness & Decision-Making Group

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Do you enjoy finding patterns in data, root causing problems, and writing algorithms to find solutions?

Do you love to tinker, build, and understand how things work in code?

Are you passionate about defending the United States and protecting our warfighters?

Do you want to work with air and missile defense technology, innovative algorithms, machine learning, and real-world operational systems?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at APL!

The U.S. Navy and Joint Forces face increasingly dangerous threats, including autonomous vehicles, sophisticated anti-ship missiles, and ballistic missiles. To defend Sailors and Marines from these threats, we in the Distributed Tactical Awareness and Decision Making group (A3A) of the Air and Missile Defense Sector drive improvements to existing and conceive new capabilities for systems that combine sensors, command and control logic, networks, and defensive weapons. We are seeking analysts, engineers, and computer scientists to help us design novel systems, build innovative software prototypes, and research new concepts to develop innovative solutions for emerging warfighter challenges.

As a new member of the Distributed Tactical Awareness and Decision Making group, you will:

  • Analyze data from test events to directly inform engineering decisions or create software tools to help analysts gain insights from data;
  • Research and develop new algorithms or software for real-time sensor integration, data fusion, and decision-making systems;
  • Help our team build these improvements into software prototypes using modern software engineering practices; and
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams and share your work with others!

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Are pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Physics, Applied Math, Engineering, or a related field with a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Have a passion for developing technology and/or conducting system analytics or modeling.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you…

  • Have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Physics, Applied Math, or an Engineering field;
  • Completed coursework involving software development, particularly in the areas of object oriented programming, data structures, signal processing, data visualization, or user interfaces.
  • Have academic or practical experience modeling and/or analyzing complex system behaviors.
