2025 Graduate – Mechanical Engineer – Shipboard Systems
Job Description
DescriptionAre you interested in solving critical challenges for the United States Navy and Air Force?
Do you love the idea of working with large, complex mechanical systems and their associated software? Does the challenge of processing and analyzing real-world data from U.S. submarines excite you? Would you love to create and validate physics-based simulations of thermofluids problems?
If you are pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a similar major, and want to work in an exciting and collaborative environment, we’d love to have you join our team!
We are seeking a college graduate ready to embrace challenges associated with simulating complex real-world system behavior of submarine launch and weapon control systems. The ideal candidate will have interest and experience in fluid dynamics analysis, whether in the laboratory or through coursework, as well as a solid understanding of object-oriented programming principles. In addition to simulation work, you will have the opportunity to work directly with the data generated by a submarine on patrol, and to influence the processing and analysis of this data here at the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). We are in the midst of transforming our data architecture to enable the use of Machine Learning algorithms to modernize our data processing, and you can be a part of this revolution!
As a member of our team...
- Your primary responsibilities will be to perform physics-based modeling and data analysis in MATLAB/Simulink, Python, and similar tools. We will provide existing code for you to learn, review, and improve upon, as well as system architecture documents and data from existing launch and control systems.
- You will implement coding best-practices using guidelines provided by the team and alongside an experienced mentor.
- You will also learn the details of the existing weapon system by supporting analysis of submarine patrol data and through in-person opportunities including on-site support for a strategic test launch off of a submerged submarine.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...
- Have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
- Have a passion for Fluid Dynamics and/or object-oriented programming as demonstrated in either a laboratory setting or through coursework.
- Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you…
- Have significant experience in MATLAB/Simulink or Python through coursework or a prior internship, and/or experience with data architecting and Machine Learning algorithms.
- Have experience developing thermofluid simulations of complex mechanical systems.
- Have prior internship experience with the U.S. Navy, DoD contractors, or government laboratories.
