Job Description Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Part-Time Student Lab Assistant to join our team in supporting college chemistry teaching labs. As a lab assistant, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of laboratory sessions by setting up equipment and chemicals, maintaining a safe environment, managing inventory, and assisting with various projects to enhance student learning and safety.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Set up laboratory equipment and materials prior to each lab session, ensuring everything is in proper working order.
  • Prepare chemical solutions according to established procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Serve as a safety ambassador by encouraging safety protocols and procedures during lab sessions.
  • Maintain accurate records of inventory using a computerized tracking system, including ordering and stocking supplies as needed.
  • Collaborate with lab staff and faculty to develop and implement safety improvements and educational enhancements for the labs.
  • Perform routine inspection, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory equipment to ensure functionality and safety.
  • Clean and organize lab spaces before and after each session, adhering to safety standards.
  • Assist with special projects and research initiatives within the lab as assigned.
  • Provide service of excellence through courteous, informed, accessible and professional engagement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Reports to: Academic Lab Manager, Chemistry

Qualifications

Required: The Educational Aide must be a currently enrolled Santa Fe College Student, pursuing a degree in a STEM related field. The student must be in good academic and behavioral standing and taking six (6) or more credit hours.  

Additional Requirements:  A criminal background check will be conducted.

Preferred:  Students with additional laboratory or chemistry coursework.

 

General Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work successfully in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Systems & Software - proficient level of knowledge of Microsoft Office and/or relevant position software programs.
  • Communication - able to effectively communicate in a professional, diplomatic, empathetic, and tactful manner using preferred method and level as applicable to the job.
